The course is designed to teach you the basic skills so you can control your canoe and self-rescue on flatwater. The first day is spent learning the strokes and canoe control, which is done through instruction and games. On the second day the morning is spent revising and refreshing your skills before you set off on trip down the river – flatwater only.

You must be able to swim 50m with clothes on.

Please note if you cannot swim you are not permitted to participate.

Successful completion of the course will earn members to a Participant Parchment and a Level 1 Canoe Badge.

Upcoming Patrol Camps

Scouts have the opportunity to participate in the following camps - but it will be up to them to coordinate and get parents involved. Note, a leader from Belmont Scouts may not be available to attend but qualified scout leaders will be present. Parental support is required to make these camps work. At a minimum parents will be required to assist with transport, however if the patrol consists of younger scouts, a parent (with a Working with Childrens Card) may be required to stay overnight. If you are interested in any of these camps please let Linda know either via email or talk to her on Tuesday!

Barwon eXtreme, You Yangs, Sunday 5th May

This is a day of abseiling and rock climbing instructed and run by the Rock Adventure Centre Geelong. Cost is $60 for the day – 9.30am-2.15pm.

Please download and complete The Rock Individual Agreement and Special Activity Form as part of the registration.

Scouts need to:

o wear clothing & footwear suitable for the activity

o meet at the You Yangs Park Office by 9:30am

o bring lunch, snacks & drink bottle

We would like to organise carpooling - if you can assist with transport to/from the You Yangs or if your scout needs transport please let me know. Can you also specify whether transport is from Geelong or the Family Camp in Wye River.

Troop Council Run Night, Barwon Valley Fun Park, Tuesday 14th May

Normal Time: 7pm-9pm

Meet: Car park furthest away from the toilet block. The car park is at the far left of the play park.

Bring: Subs, torch, wet weather clothes (weather permitting), wear running shoes, drink bottle and any other things that the individual may need

The night will be run and was planned by the troop council (patrol leaders and assistant patrol leaders)

We will be playing games most of the night – capture the flag, treasure hunt and a big game of survivor!

Scout Hike, Friday 17th– Sunday 19thMay 2013

Scout Hike is an annual, state-wide hiking event for between 200 and 500 scouts. In 2013 it's going to be held in the Tallarook State Forest.

Ra (Roger) has offered to accompany a Learner patrol made up of Belmont Scouts. Being part of a learner patrol allows an introduction to hiking and lightweight camping for those scouts who have little or no experience.

Patrol size is going to be between 4 and 7 scouts - first in, best dressed!! Cost $40. You'll find heaps more information on this website: - check the relevant links leading away from the main page also.

Final numbers and payment due by Tuesday 23rd April!

Level 1 Kayak and Canoe Courses, Saturday 18th– Sunday 19th May

No experience necessary for the Canoe Course.

Must have completed the Canoe Course to do the Kayak Course.

Course runs Saturday from 8:30am to 4:30pm, Sunday 8:30am to 3:30pm (includes a trip of 3 hours duration)

It will be chilly so a wetsuit or thermals and wind proof jacket minimum (or both) is recommended.

Camp Courage, Saturday 29th June – Saturday 6th July in Appin, NSW

This is a great, back to basics Scout camp with a focus on “Duty to God”. It includes activities like horse riding, bmx, outdoor abseiling and prussiking, bible study, hiking, bushcraft, navigation, hot air balloons, metal work, axemanship and more!

Talk to Aran or Rohan Barnes to find out more. Registrations will be in the next couple of weeks so if you’re interested speak to Tyto (Scott) now as places fill quickly.

Patrol Film Challenge, Queenscliff, Saturday 7th - Sunday 8th September

Coming up on the 7th and 8th of September is the inaugural Patrol Film Challenge, being held at Queenscliff. This event will qualify you for a patrol activity badge and part B & C of the Performing Arts Proficiency Badge. You will work in activity patrols to plan, film, star in, direct, edit and produce a short film based on the Scout Laws.

You will be given a zoned off area of Queenscliff in which to go out and do your filming. Leaders will be out and about in the town in full uniform for supervision and assistance. You are going to be provided with a video camera to film with and will have access to a laptop for your patrol to edit your movie on, back at the hall. All meals except lunch on Saturday will be provided and you will be sleeping in the Queenscliff Scout Hall.

Bring all personal equipment, as if you were going on a standing camp (toiletries, dilly bag, stretcher, sleeping bag etc.), but you will not need a tent. A film screening is planned for 2pm on Sunday (parents are welcome to attend). Also please make sure that you bring a completed PIR (health statement) with you.

This is a region activity, meaning that scouts from all over the Greater Geelong area can apply. It also only has limited places so if you wish to attend confirm ASAP so you don’t miss out on a place.
